We announce with deep sorrow the passing of Major William Turner on January 27, 2025, who departed peacefully in Dumfries.

Maj. Willie Turner was a formidable presence, known for his stubborn determination and love for rugby, which mirrored the steadfastness he brought to all aspects of his life. He served the King’s Own Scottish Borderers in the regular army then with the TA, After that, he dedicated 13 years to the Royal British Legion, cumulatively offering over half a century of distinguished service to his country and community.

As president of the Dumfries British Legion branch, he raised over £250,000 for the Poppy Appeal, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to veterans and their families. Passionately advocating for improved mental health provisions for veterans in the region.

Reflecting sentiments once expressed about his father, Willie Turner “was not a man who suffered fools gladly or otherwise, and on appropriate occasions his tongue could have a sharp edge. He spoke and acted the truth as he saw it in both personal and professional relations, with no time for flattery or subterfuge. Above all, he was a man in whose presence anything mean or false seemed to shrivel away. We are all richer for having known him and immeasurably the poorer for his loss.”

Willie Turner was a good husband, son, uncle, and a true Borderer. His memory will be cherished by his family, friends, comrades, and all whose lives he touched.
