RAISING OF THE REGIMENT

18 March 2022

On this day March 18 1689, the Scottish Parliament issued a warrant to David Leslie, 3rd Earl of Leven (1660-1728), authorising him to raise a regiment of 800 men to safeguard the City of Edinburgh. Within the space of two hours, 1000 men had rallied to the cause. Over the next few days, more than 800 of these men swore the oath of Attestation, and were placed on the Government’s payroll.

The Regiment would be known as Leven’s Regiment and The Edinburgh Regiment finally becoming The King’s Own Scottish Borderers. They would serve with distinction throughout the British Empire for 317 years until 28 March 2006.
