With regret and sadness we inform you of the death of “Shep” Sheperd who served in the 1st Bn from 1968 until 1980, predominately in B Coy. Shep was found dead at his home in Coldstream on the 7th March. “Always a Borderer”

FROM THE ROYAL BRITISH LEGION

Berlin Blockade 70
During the occupation of post-World War II Germany, the Soviet Union blocked the Western Allies’ railway, road and canal access to the sectors of Berlin under Western control.

Britain and it allies responded by initiating the largest airlift in history, flying more than 270,000 relief misions into Tempelhof Airport, delivering over 1,500,000 tons of coal, food and essential supplies to save the inhabitants of West Berlin.

At one minute after midnight on 12 May 1949, the Soviets lifted their barricades and restored access to West Berlin. The breaking of the blockade was the first great humanitarian operation carried out by Britain and its allies.

On Sunday 12 May, marking the 70th Aniversary of the end of the Berlin Blockade, The Royal British Legion will be hosting a lunch reception at the IWM Duxford for Veterans and guests to honour their service and heroism.

Guests will have the opportunity to view concurrent commemoration in Berlin at Tempelhof Airport and have time to explore the IWM Duxford and its numerous aircraft, many of which are of significance to the Berlin Airlift.

REGISTRATION
Registration for our event is now open, and we encourage associations to share this widely to ensure we reach as many veterans as possible.

Veterans and guests can register here.

FROM GEERT STEEVENS

It’s 75 year ago that the Allies launched the operation Market Garden. KOSB liberated Achel (Belgium – 20 september 1944) Five heritage associations of our region have a plan to commemorate the start of the operation in our region. This will taking place on 20th September 2019 at the Meuse-Escaut Canal at Lille St.-Hubert (St-Huibrechts-Lille), Hamont, Kaulille, Budel, … Before we finalize our plan we like to know who will attend the commemoration? Of course the KOSB is kindly invited to participate. FYI: The friends of the Suffolk Regiment have confirmed. Maybe you can help with our investigation: Do someone have war diaries from the KOSB during their campaign in Belgium (18-23 september 1944) Kind regards, Geert Stevens Hamont-Achel (Belgium)

On June 8 and 9, various events will be held in Grentheville, including children’s exhibits and history and heritage associations, presentation of objects and materials related to Operation Goodwood and life. daily of the time and concerts of music schools. One of the cultural and educational components is the creation of a rotating exhibition in the communes concerned by the battle, the installation of a temporary exhibition and a permanent showcase at the Pegasus memorial museum.Another component will be the installation of educational materials with presentation materials for a tourist and memorial tour, in the battle area, in the various municipalities that wish to do so. kind regards Linda Robson Contact address for event: comitegoodwood1944@gmail.com
