Piper Daniel Laidlaw VC
Thursday 25 September 2025 marks the 110th anniversary of the Battle of Loos, when Piper Daniel Laidlaw walked the ramparts of his trench in full view of the enemy playing ‘Blue Bonnets O’er The Border’ thus inspiring the men of his company to attack the enemy trenches. As a result of this courageous act, Piper Laidlaw was awarded the Victoria Cross.
Our annual service of commemoration of this event will be held at 0945 on Thursday 25 September at Norham War Memorial, adjacent to the Parish Church of St Cuthbert, 111 Church Lane, Norham, Berwick upon Tweed, Northumberland, TD15 2LE, before moving round to Piper Laidlaw’s graveside where a wreath will be laid by Brian Law, the Great-Grandson of Piper Laidlaw. After the service, refreshments will be available in the Church.
All Borderers are invited to attend this important commemoration and those attending should gather at the Norham War Memorial at 0930. Dress is Regimental tie, Glengarry and medals. For catering purposes please notify Bill Heaney (bhxxv@btinternet.com ) by Monday 15 September if you will be attending.
