Private William Henderson – Notification by Gordon Henderson

Borderers,

I wish to advise you that my father William Henderson sadly died on October 4^th 2016 aged 97.

He reported to Berwick upon Tweed on October 16^th 1939 where he joined the Borderers, initially joining the 7^th Battalion then going into the 6^th Battalion based at North Weald Aerodrome defending sea defences around Clacton on Sea. Dad subsequently transferred to the 2^ndBattalion and and left for the Far East arriving at Karachi then Razmak and then moving to Cammelpore where he became part of the newly formed 7th (Indian) Division. After jungle training they headed for Burma via Madras, Chittagong, Waybin and then Arakan. They were involved in numerous battles including the Battle of the Admin Box where Dad’s Commanding Officer, Lt Colonel Jasper DuncanAlexander MacLaren was hit and died from his wounds. After this they proceeded to Hill 1620 and then onto Imphal-Kohima front before moving onto the “Hump” where they heard about D Day, though obviously for them the conflict carried on for some time.

Post war he became a dairyman, postman and then a teacher. He always spoke so proudly about the King’s Own Scottish Borderers, the comradeship, friendships, bravery and he always had admiration for the Gurkhas.
